CALEIDOSCORPO: One Stitch at a Time
There was a time in my life when nothing was certain. I had neither a place nor a person to call home—even my own body felt foreign to me. And then came sewing.
Through the exploration of material, I discovered crumb quilting—a technique I never imagined could create such complex textile sculptures, yet one that ultimately made perfect sense. A crumb quilt utilizes tiny, irregular fabric scraps ("crumbs") that would typically be discarded from traditional quilting projects. Through this labor-intensive process, I meticulously reassembled these fragments between layers of tulle and soluble stabilizer, resulting in expansive panels of reconstructed garments.
These sculptures embody collective memory, stitched together from fragments of lived experiences, migration, loss, and renewal. Just as my personal journey has been shaped by continuous reinvention and resistance, CALEIDOSCORPO suggests that "home" is never fixed but rather an ongoing construction.
The quilting process—historically associated with care, resilience, and community—serves as a metaphor for a body finding renewal through layered transformation. The transparency of the tulle and the dissolution of stabilizers introduce an element of impermanence, reinforcing that the structures we inhabit, whether physical or conceptual, are always in flux.
Ultimately, CALEIDOSCORPO: One Stitch at a Time proposes an alternative cartography—one stitched together from fragments of the past yet open to new configurations—where home is not a predetermined destination but a dynamic, evolving site of possibility.
